Begin with a colour you are drawn to. We can consider suitable gemstones and personally search for a pair that comes as close as possible in colour, shape and dimensions.

We consider how the gemstones relate in colour, tone and overall appearance. Common colours may allow a very close match, while an unusual or highly particular colour may require a more extensive search.

The outline, length, width and visible proportions of each gemstone are considered together. These details help the finished earrings feel balanced when viewed and worn as a pair.

The weight of the gemstones, metal and setting is considered together with how the earrings are supported. A larger presence does not always need to feel heavy—the construction and distribution of weight may be adjusted to help the pair remain comfortable when worn.

The form of an earring is considered together with how it is supported, secured and allowed to move. From a close-fitting stud to an articulated drop, each construction is developed around the gemstones, the intended presence and the way the pair will be worn.

Earrings are generally protected from the repeated contact experienced by rings, but their movement creates different considerations. Each setting is developed around the gemstones, the construction and how the pair will move when worn.

A softer or more delicate gemstone may benefit from a protective setting, additional support or a more contained construction. The intention is to preserve its character while reducing unnecessary exposure during wear.

Pointed corners and vulnerable areas are considered carefully when the setting is developed. Where additional protection or clearance is required, the design and support around the gemstone will be adjusted accordingly.

MOVEMENT BETWEEN ELEMENTS
In earrings with suspended or articulated components, the spacing is considered so that gemstones can move naturally without repeatedly striking one another. The connections and reverse of the setting are also refined to reduce catching against hair or clothing.
